Markham, Ont. - The Word Guild is pleased to announce the winners of the Canadian Christian Writing Awards for 2004. The awards recognize the best writing published in 2003 by Canadian writers who are Christian.

The winners were announced on June 18 in Guelph, Ontario during Write! Canada, the twentieth annual "God Uses Ink" Christian writers' conference.

Awards were presented in 23 categories from a strong field of 117 entries. This year's winners included pastor and author Mark Buchanan of Duncan, BC; John G. Stackhouse of Vancouver, professor at Regent College; author Sigmund Brouwer of Red Deer, AB; novelist Linda Hall of Fredericton, NB; and novelist Connie Brummel Crook of Peterborough, ON.

The sixteenth annual Leslie K. Tarr career achievement award was presented to Canada's best-selling author, Janette Oke, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Christian writing and publishing in Canada.

The First-Time Canadian Christian Author Award was presented to Angelina Fast-Vlaar for her manuscript "Seven Angels for Seven Days: A Widow's Journey." The winning manuscript will be published in 2005 by Castle Quay Books Canada and Essence Publishing. Last year's winner, Paul Boge, was recognized at reception where he signed copies of his book, "The Chicago Healer."

The Word Guild Awards are open to all eligible writers, and are not restricted to members of The Word Guild. All entrants are asked to affirm The Apostles' Creed as a condition of acceptance in the contest. However, the opinions expressed in the short-listed and winning works represent the authors' personal beliefs and are not necessarily endorsed by The Word Guild.

The Word Guild is a two-year-old association of Canadian writers and editors who are Christian. Members are committed to encouraging one another and fostering standards of excellence in the art, craft, business and ministry of writing. The long-term vision is to impact the Canadian identity through writing from a Christian worldview. Immediate goals are to help writers and editors at all stages connect with each other, develop new skills, discover new publishing opportunities and promote their work.
